PSE Colombia: How Online Bank Payments Work

Published: ·Editorial Desk·Updated: ·4 min readPublic

TL;DR

PSE (Pagos Seguros en Línea) is Colombia's system for paying online directly from a bank account. At checkout, the buyer picks PSE and their bank, logs in to online banking, approves the payment, and the money moves from their account to the merchant. It is operated by ACH Colombia and is one of the most used online payment methods in the country, alongside cards and digital wallets.

PSE Colombia: definition and positioning

PSE is a bank-redirect payment method. Instead of entering card details, the payer is sent to their own bank's online banking to authorize a debit from their savings or checking account. ACH Colombia, the country's automated clearing house owned by its banks, runs the PSE network and connects merchants, payment gateways, and banks.

That makes PSE closer to an account-to-account payment than a card payment. It reaches Colombians who have a bank account but no credit card, which is a large share of the market, and it is the standard way to pay taxes, utilities, tuition, insurance, and many e-commerce orders.

Why the distinction matters: PSE is a payment-in method. It moves money from a Colombian buyer's bank to a Colombian merchant. It is not a payout rail for sending money to individuals, and it does not handle cross-border payments on its own.

How PSE works

  1. Checkout. The buyer selects PSE as the payment method on a merchant's site or app.
  2. Bank selection. The buyer chooses their bank from a list of participating Colombian banks and digital platforms and selects whether they are a person or a company.
  3. Redirect and authentication. The buyer is redirected to their bank's online banking, logs in, and authorizes the payment, usually with a second factor such as a code.
  4. Debit and confirmation. The bank debits the account, and PSE returns a confirmation to the merchant, which marks the order as paid.
  5. Settlement. Funds settle to the merchant's account through the merchant's payment gateway or acquiring bank.

Merchants do not usually connect to PSE directly. They integrate through a payment gateway or payment service provider that holds the PSE connection, such as local gateways and international platforms that support Colombian payment methods.

PSE in practice

For consumers, PSE is how many Colombians pay bills and shop online without a credit card. Digital accounts such as Nequi also appear as PSE options, which extends PSE to wallet users.

For merchants, accepting PSE is close to mandatory for selling online in Colombia. Card-only checkouts leave out a large part of the market.

For cross-border businesses, PSE is how a foreign company collects payments from Colombian customers in pesos. A payment provider accepts the PSE payment locally, then settles to the merchant abroad, increasingly in dollars or stablecoins. This is the pay-in side of the same LATAM pattern we cover in pay-in and pay-out: local rails collect the money cheaply, and the cross-border leg decides the real cost and speed.

Trade-offs and limitations

Not instant for every bank. Confirmation is usually immediate, but settlement timing to the merchant depends on the gateway and bank.

Friction. Redirecting to online banking adds steps compared with a saved card or wallet, and abandoned payments are common when bank sites are slow.

Pay-in only. PSE collects payments; paying out to individuals uses other methods, such as bank transfers or wallets.

Domestic. Payers need a Colombian bank account, so PSE does not help merchants collect from customers outside Colombia.

FAQs

What is PSE in Colombia?

PSE, short for Pagos Seguros en Línea, is Colombia's online bank payment system. It lets buyers pay merchants directly from their bank account by authorizing the payment in their own online banking. It is operated by ACH Colombia.

Is PSE safe?

Yes. The buyer authenticates directly with their own bank, so the merchant never sees their banking credentials. Payments are authorized with the bank's own security, typically including a second factor such as a one-time code.

Who operates PSE?

ACH Colombia, the automated clearing house owned by Colombian banks, operates the PSE network. Merchants usually access it through a payment gateway rather than integrating with ACH Colombia directly.

Can foreigners pay with PSE?

Only if they have a Colombian bank account with online banking. PSE debits Colombian bank accounts, so visitors paying with foreign cards need to use card payments instead.

Can businesses outside Colombia accept PSE?

Yes, through a payment provider that supports Colombian local payment methods. The provider collects the PSE payment in pesos and settles to the foreign merchant, sometimes in dollars or stablecoins.
