PIX Payments for Global Businesses

TL;DR

PIX is the Central Bank of Brazil's instant payment system, launched in October 2020, clearing more than 42 billion transactions worth roughly 1.2 trillion dollars in a single recent year, with settlement under 10 seconds, 24/7/365. It's free for individuals and roughly 0.33% for merchants domestically. The limit that matters for a foreign business: PIX is Brazilian-real-only and stops at the border, it isn't an international payment rail. A foreign business reaches PIX through a licensed off-ramp, BRLA, Bitso, Mercado Bitcoin, and Transfero are the main liquidity providers, which converts incoming stablecoins to BRL and pays the recipient via PIX.

How PIX works domestically

PIX interoperates across Brazil's banking system by mandate for large institutions, with 175 million-plus registered users. It settles nearly instantly and is available around the clock, including holidays and weekends, a genuine leap over correspondent banking's multi-day settlement.

How a foreign business actually pays or gets paid via PIX

The mechanics run through a licensed local off-ramp sitting between stablecoin rails and PIX itself. A US or European company paying a Brazilian supplier converts its own currency to a dollar stablecoin, the off-ramp partner converts that to BRL, and the payment lands via PIX, typically within minutes of the stablecoin settling on-chain. The reverse works the same way for a Brazilian company paying an overseas vendor.

The 2026 regulatory change that actually matters

Brazil's central bank issued Resolutions 519, 520, and 521 in November 2025, largely effective February 2026, followed by Resolution 561, effective October 1, 2026, which specifically bars regulated electronic FX providers, payment institutions, e-money issuers, and acquirers, from using stablecoins to settle the offshore leg of a cross-border payment. That settlement now has to run through a traditional FX transaction or a non-resident BRL account instead. This reshapes which licensed channel a foreign business should route through, confirm current licensing status with any off-ramp partner given this change.

What to check before going live

Licensing under the current framework. Confirm your off-ramp partner's status is current against Resolution 561's October 2026 change, not just its pre-2026 licensing.

IOF-câmbio tax exposure. Brazil's fiat-conversion leg is treated as an FX operation subject to the current IOF-câmbio rate, roughly 3.5% for most outbound flows as of 2026.

PIX's cross-border limits. PIX itself doesn't natively support international transfers, though bilateral partnerships are expanding, Uruguay adopted PIX in 2023, Argentina connected 37 banks in December 2025, and additional coverage extends to Panama, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Venezuela through PagBrasil integrations. None of this replaces a licensed stablecoin off-ramp for a genuinely cross-border B2B payment.
