Gnosis Pay Review: The Self-Custodial Visa Card for Europe

Published: ·Editorial Desk·Updated: ·5 min readPublic

Verdict

Gnosis Pay is a self-custodial Visa debit card that spends stablecoins directly from a Safe smart account you control, with no monthly fees and 0% FX on euro spending. It suits European and UK crypto users who want onchain spending without trusting a custodian. The honest catch: cashback of 1% to 5% is paid in GNO, requires holding GNO, and is capped weekly. It is not available in the US.

What is Gnosis Pay?

Gnosis Pay is a payment card built by Gnosis, the team behind Gnosis Chain, an Ethereum-compatible network designed for cheap, fast transactions. The card runs on the Visa network, works with Apple Pay and Google Pay, and is linked to a Safe smart account rather than a bank or exchange account.

That link is the whole point. Your funds sit onchain in an account only you control. When you tap the card, the payment settles from that account on Gnosis Chain. No company holds your balance in between.

Gnosis Pay is available across most of the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland, and has expanded into Latin America, including Brazil and Argentina. It is not available in the United States, Canada, or most of Asia.

How Gnosis Pay works

You complete identity verification, create or connect your Safe account, and top it up with your region's stablecoin: EURe in the eurozone, GBPe in the UK, and USDC on Gnosis Chain in other supported markets. You can also receive a personal IBAN, so you can fund the account with a regular bank transfer that converts to stablecoins.

When you pay, Visa authorizes the purchase against your onchain balance and the amount settles on Gnosis Chain. Gnosis covers the network fees, so you do not pay gas per purchase. Spending in your account's own currency carries 0% FX.

Cashback is paid weekly in GNO, Gnosis Chain's native token, and depends on how much GNO you keep in your card account. Holding at least 0.1 GNO unlocks 1% cashback on up to €200 of spend per week, and 1 GNO unlocks 2% on up to €500 a week. Larger holdings raise the rate toward 5%, and holders of the Gnosis Pay OG NFT receive an extra 1% boost.

Where risk sits: there is no custodian risk, but you are responsible for your account's security, and your cashback is paid in a volatile token. The card program itself still depends on Gnosis Pay's licensed issuing partners and compliance checks.

  • No monthly or annual fees, and Gnosis covers network fees.
  • 0% FX on spending in your account currency.
  • Personal IBAN makes topping up from a bank simple.
  • Weekly cashback payouts, with meaningful rates even at small GNO holdings.

Cons

  • Cashback is paid in GNO and requires holding GNO, so your rewards and the capital behind them move with a volatile token.
  • Weekly spend caps limit cashback for heavy spenders.
  • Not available in the US, Canada, or most of Asia.
  • One-time physical card fee of about €30.
  • Self-custody means you carry the responsibility for securing your account.

Who should use Gnosis Pay

Ideal user: a European or UK crypto user who already holds stablecoins, values self-custody, and is comfortable holding a small amount of GNO to unlock cashback on everyday spending.

Acceptable user: someone who wants a no-fee onchain card for euro spending and ignores cashback entirely.

Wrong user: US residents, who cannot get the card; heavy spenders who will hit the weekly cashback caps; and anyone who does not want to manage their own account security.
