Verdict
Ledn is a Bitcoin-only lender that charges more than its rivals in exchange for a stricter collateral model. Your BTC is not lent out to generate interest, loans start at a conservative 50% LTV, and Ledn publishes monthly loan book data. Loans can be funded in USD, USDC or USDT. The honest catch is cost: 9.25% to 11.49% APR is roughly double what onchain lenders charge. Ledn earns a recommendation for BTC holders who rank custody risk above price.
What is Ledn?
Ledn is a financial services company, founded in 2018 by Adam Reeds and Mauricio Di Bartolomeo, that offers bitcoin-backed loans to clients in more than 130 countries. It has originated over $2.8 billion in retail loans, according to Orrick, its legal counsel.
The differentiating fact: in February 2026, Ledn closed a $188 million asset-backed security made up of its bitcoin-collateralized loans, and S&P Global Ratings gave the senior notes a BBB- investment-grade rating. That was the first such rating for a digital asset lending portfolio. Tether made a strategic investment in Ledn in late 2025, Raptor Group reported.
Beyond lending, Ledn offers Growth accounts that earn interest on USDC and USDT, a B2X product, and BTC and gold trading.
How Ledn works
A Ledn loan is a fixed-term, USD-denominated loan secured by your bitcoin. The mechanics, per Ledn's loan page:
- Apply and pass KYC. No credit check is required. Approval rests on your bitcoin as collateral, not your credit score.
- Transfer BTC. At the typical 50% starting LTV, $10,000 of bitcoin supports a $5,000 loan. The minimum loan amount is $500.
- Receive funds. Loans are denominated in US dollars but can be funded in USD, USDC, USDT or CAD.
- Manage LTV. Ledn sends notifications at 70% and 75% LTV. Auto Top-Up, where available, pulls BTC from your Transaction Account at 70%. At 80%, liquidation is automatic: Ledn sells enough collateral to cover the loan balance, charges a 0.50% trade spread, and returns the rest.
- Repay or renew. The standard loan term is 12 months with no monthly payments. Interest accrues daily and is due when the loan is repaid. You can repay early without penalty, using stablecoins, a bank transfer or collateral.
Where risk sits: your collateral stays in custody for the life of the loan. It may be re-posted to an institutional USD funding partner or a Ledn financing vehicle, but in that case it is legally ring-fenced or held in a bankruptcy-remote structure, and neither Ledn nor the partner can lend it out. Your exposure is to Ledn's custody and legal structuring, not to a lending book built on rehypothecated BTC.
One change to note: from January 1, 2027, accrued interest and fees must be paid in full at maturity or on refinancing. Renewal also requires LTV below 65%. If your stablecoin balance cannot cover the shortfall, Ledn sells BTC to settle it.

Ledn pros and cons
Pros
- No rehypothecation. Collateral is not lent out to generate interest, and it is legally ring-fenced from funding partners.
- Wide liquidation buffer. A 50% start and 80% liquidation lets BTC fall about 37% before collateral is sold.
- Stablecoin funding. You can take the loan in USDC or USDT, not just dollars.
- Unusual transparency. A monthly Open Book Report, proof-of-reserves attestations every six months, SOC 2 Type 2 certification and an S&P-rated loan portfolio.
- Low minimum. At $500, Ledn suits small borrowers as well as large ones.
- No admin fee in the US. The 2% fee is waived for US and Canadian clients.
Cons
- Expensive. 11.49% APR on loans under $250,000 is about double variable onchain rates on Aave or the Coinbase-Morpho integration.
- Bitcoin only. ETH, SOL and other assets are not accepted as collateral.
- Fixed 12-month terms. This is not a revolving credit line, and renewal conditions tighten in 2027.
- Custodial. You trust Ledn's structure rather than a smart contract. The ring-fencing is a legal protection, and it has not been tested in a Ledn insolvency.
- Patchy US availability. Eligibility varies by state, and some locations require a minimum principal or a commercial purpose.
Who should use Ledn
Ideal user: a long-term BTC holder who needs dollars or stablecoins for a defined purpose, such as a property deposit or business working capital, and whose top priority is not losing the bitcoin to a lender failure.
Acceptable user: a smaller borrower who values the $500 minimum, the human support and the 30-point liquidation buffer, and accepts paying more for them.
Wrong user: anyone chasing the lowest rate, anyone whose collateral is ETH or another asset, and anyone who wants an open credit line to draw and repay repeatedly. Those borrowers are better served elsewhere.
Alternatives worth considering
- Nexo: an open credit line paid in USDT or USDC against 30+ assets. More flexible, but the best rates depend on loyalty tiers.
- Coinbase via Morpho: variable rates advertised from about 5% for US BTC and ETH holders outside New York. Cheaper, with a much thinner buffer between 75% LTV and 86% liquidation.
- Figure: a fixed 12-month loan at 9.999% APR at 50% LTV, accepting BTC, ETH and SOL. It pays US borrowers in dollars rather than stablecoins.

FAQs
Is Ledn legit and safe?
Ledn is an established lender founded in 2018 that has originated more than $2.8 billion in retail loans. It publishes monthly loan book reports and proof-of-reserves, and its loan portfolio earned an S&P BBB- rating in 2026. It is still a custodial lender, so safety depends on its custody and legal structure.
Does Ledn lend out my bitcoin?
No. Ledn states that collateral is held in custody and never lent out to generate interest. It may be re-posted to an institutional funding partner or a Ledn financing vehicle, but only in a legally ring-fenced or bankruptcy-remote structure. The partner cannot lend it out either.
What happens if the bitcoin price drops on a Ledn loan?
Your LTV rises. Ledn notifies you at 70% and 75%, and you can add BTC, repay part of the loan, or use Auto Top-Up where available. At 80% LTV, Ledn automatically sells enough collateral to repay the loan, charges a 0.50% trade spread, and returns any remaining bitcoin.
Is Ledn available in the US?
Yes, Ledn offers bitcoin-backed loans to US clients, and the 2% admin fee does not apply in the US or Canada. Availability varies by state, and some locations require a minimum loan size or confirmation of a commercial purpose. Check Ledn's eligibility page before applying.
Can I get a Ledn loan in USDC?
Yes. Ledn loans are denominated in US dollars but can be funded in USDC, USDT, USD or CAD. You can also repay from an eligible stablecoin balance, and at maturity Ledn applies stablecoins in your Transaction Account to any interest and fees due.
Ledn vs Nexo: which is better?
Ledn suits BTC holders who want fixed terms and collateral that is never lent out. Nexo suits borrowers who want a flexible credit line, multi-asset collateral and stablecoin payouts, and who can keep LTV low enough for its cheaper tiers. Ledn costs more but carries less rehypothecation risk.
The takeaway: Ledn is what a crypto lender looks like after 2022. It is conservative on LTV, explicit about custody, and rated by a traditional agency. You pay for that in rate. The open question is whether its ABS funding can bring rates closer to onchain levels as the market matures. For more on borrowing against BTC, start with the best crypto-backed loans.
